Son Veneno came to life in Sydney, Australia. Cesar Marin, Steve
Marin and Lautaro Veloso began playing music together
from a very young age after migrating from Latin America. Inspired
by the music of Irakere and Los Van Van they
found their path through the music of Cuba. The decision was
made to find like-minded musicians, with the intention of raising
the standard of Afro-Latin music in Australia. This musical endeavor
led to the formation of SON VENENO.
“Son” is a style of popular dance music
that originated in the Oriente province of Cuba. It
is the foundation of modern Salsa, also the Spanish word for “they
are”. “Veneno” is the Spanish
word for “venom” hence
describing Son Veneno’s infectious music.
The following years were spent performing around the country,
building a healthy fan base and establishing themselves at the
forefront of the music industry in Australia. Their extremely
high levels of musicianship and performance led to the band being
recognized internationally, regularly invited to perform at major
festivals and events. The band quickly earned a reputation for
being the number one Afro-Cuban outfit within Australia and according
to fans and critics alike, the Southern Hemisphere.
This momentum created opportunities to collaborate with musicians
outside the Latin genre. The addition of young and talented musicians;
Marty Farrugia, Mike Raper, Will Fry and Damien Cooper enabled
the band to incorporate advanced elements of Jazz, Reggae, Funk
and Hip Hop into their music.
Son Veneno had become an ‘Irakere’ style band, possessing
the ability to perform at the highest levels of the
Salsa world and also having a world class repertoire of Latin
Jazz, Latin Hip Hop and Latin Alternative music.
The natural progression of composing together unearthed an exciting
new sound.
Son Veneno’s diversity continued over the years, composing,
recording and performing with many international artists including Ozomatli,
Luis Alemany & Cubanismo, Los De Abajo, Celia Cruz, Conjunto
Cespedes, Maya Jupiter, Los Amigos Invicibles, Metallica, Kelis,
Jose Alberto ‘El Canario”, Fulanito, Cuban
trumpeter Armando Garcia (Lady Salsa), vocalists Rebecca
Tapia, Carlos Velasquez and Carlos Mora.
Their much anticipated self titled album shows a blistering repertoire
of styles from Latin Funk influenced tracks such as “Blow, Present” and “Perhaps”.
“Stupid Song” a Caribbean carousel of wacky
lyrics inspired by the bands main wish to make crowds go wild.
