Sankoulekan brings together the finest West African percussionists and dancers from Burkina Faso, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Senegal with gifted performers from the UK, each adding their own individual flair to the performances.
Now a significant presence on the music circuit, Nahini and Sankoulekan are constantly cultivating new ideas, sharing their love of African culture with audiences everywhere.
The band’s thunderous rhythms and breathtaking dancers have delighted audiences at many venues and festivals including the South Bank Centre, Portobello Community Festival, the Eid Festival in Leicester Square, London Remix Festival, Rhythm Tree Festival, Shoreditch Festival, Hootananny, Passing Clouds, and many more…They also made an appearance in ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ , the ultimate Bollywood blockbuster directed by legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra filmed in London in 2012.
Along with live performances Sankoulekan runs inspiring percussion workshops in association with the best African dance teachers and choreographers. Past workshops have taken place at Womad, Drum Camp and the Cedar Cultural Centre in Minneapolis, involving hundreds of participants.
Sankoulekan skilfully combines West-African modern sounds with traditional Mandinka rhythms to take you into a percussive upbeat journey into African music and culture. Its diversity and multiple influences create music of astounding power, and their thunderous and fiery rhythms are guaranteed to sweep you off your feet!
